William Bradford
"We have noted these things, that you may see the worth of these things, and not negligently lose what your fathers have obtained with so much hardship,"(J bio Bradford W. Doherty. Doherty, Kieran William Bradford: rock of plymouth/c1999)
William Bradford was born in March of 1590. He had an older sister named Alice just like his mother, but his sister was born in 1587. Williams older sister was 3 years older. His dad was a yeoman. His mom was the daughter of the towns leading merchant.
He was very into religion and tried to escape from England because the religion he did is not what the queen wanted. Eventually, Bradford got away to Holland with his peers. Later, they made the well known mayflower, and took that to Cape Cod Bay.
They made a small town. One room for each person. They figured out that a Native American named Squanto lived there, with other native Americans and tribes. The pilgrims signed a peace treaty from the tribes. The pilgrims and Indians were very good friends.
Dorothy Bradford (Williams Wife) fell off the anchored Mayflower either because of suicide or by accident. William never spoke of her again.
William was governor for 31 years, but he was not elected all in a row. He helped start the first thanksgiving and was a part of the first thanksgiving. William, the other pilgrims, and some Native American tribes, were all at the very first thanksgiving.
The Fortune (a boat sent from The London Adventurers) came to stay with the pilgrims. They left after about a month because there was not enough food for all. More ships eventually came, and there was only enough food for everybody to have a quarter of a pound of bread a day to keep everybody alive till the next harvest.
Squanto became ill, with lots of nose bleeds and what was a very bad cold. He was the last of the Patuxet tribe, and Squanto later died. Bradford felt sorrow for Squanto, as though he felt sorry for Sqanto and his tribe.
Food ran low again, and the pilgrims could not hunt. They could only eat edible roots, clams and anything else they were lucky to find. The winter weather was not easy on the pilgrims. In Plymouth many were dying of starvation.
Cape Cod Bay, is in Massachusetts. Also locatted with the well known Plymouth Rock, that is a tourist attractin today, that you can read about what happend there and around there.
